This week’s featured collections object is a medical kit belonging to Dr. Thomas Marshall Taylor. Dated to be from the early 1900s, the medical kit is a black leather pouch which holds many vials. The vials are labeled with ginger, calomel, glycerine and laudanum. Some of these vials are still stained with these liquids!

The drugs were made by C.W. Dickinson, a druggist in Cartersville. Some of the drugs in this kit have a versatile use in their treatments. Calomel was also known as quicksilver and was used to treat syphilis. Laudanum, meanwhile, was used as a pain reliever and treated both hysteria and dysentery. Glycerine served as a laxative base in making cough syrup. Lastly, ginger, still widely used today, was used to treat diarrhea, nausea and cough.
